When you click on a recipe to view it in full, you'll notice near the top a section that contains following information:
- Required major ingredients
- Adjustable number of servings
- Cost per serving
- Cost of groceries
- Total cost of the meal
- Grocery leftovers
What are grocery leftovers?
Some recipes simply do not use up the full packaged amount of every ingredient, so there are "leftover" ingredients. Grocery leftovers is the dollar amount of those leftover ingredients that will not be utilized. Generally speaking, more recipes you select with crossover ingredients, the lower the grocery leftovers amount will be.
Cost-efficient product selection
In cases where there are leftovers, if you order multiple recipes with overlapping ingredients, those same products will not be added to your cart multiple times.
If our system sees that a certain item is already in your cart, it will not add more beyond the total required amount for all the recipes using that item.
The more overlapping ingredients, the lower the total cost of the meal and the amount of grocery leftovers. Through this method, we are able to reduce food waste from leftover ingredients, while helping you manage the cost and usage of your groceries more effectively!
Cost-per-serving
We calculate cost per serving based on the total cost of the meal, the grocery leftovers, and the servings indicated on the recipe.
The total cost of the meal minus the grocery leftovers, divided by the number of servings equals the cost per serving. Here's an example:
So by this formula, ($9.48-$1.82) / 6 = $1.28 per serving
The products automatically selected for our recipes are the least-wasteful package size available per the recipe's required amount, as well as the cheapest product per the package size. This way, you save the time you otherwise would have spent searching through every product option and calculating the best option for yourself.
